This year (2010) finds me as a Postgraduate Student at Central Queensland University.
I had been working for Connell Wagner Pty Ltd as Senior Structural Engineer but I was made redundant during the 2009 "Economic Downturn". Though the economy is picking up in some areas, the trend in Engineering is for companies to re-staff their head offices in Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne first.
I myself, not being in a hurry to move to a capital city, chose to enrol in the Graduate Diploma of Learning and Teaching on the basis that there is continuing high demand for mathematics and science teachers in regional areas like Mackay. On the other hand, there is an increasing trend to get engineering design work done in Indonesia or India where the engineers get paid less. For a reasonable period of time I expect there will still be a need for teachers to be in classrooms so I expect there to be work for Australians in this field.
I like the idea that teaching is quite decentralised with plenty of work in regional areas.
